Herbert "Herb" Andrew Sprague

Herbert Andrew Sprague (Herb) was born April 22, 1930 at home in Beaver County, Oklahoma to Andrew Nelson and Vena (Getz) Sprague.  

He attended grade school at Hibbs, a one room school house near the family home.   He graduated from Beaver High School with the class of 1949.  Herb was football team captain. He attended college at Panhandle A&M and Northwestern College.  In 1952 he was drafted into military service and served at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri until 1954.  Herb moved to Wichita, KS and began working for Boeing Airplane Company.  While there, he met Lura Marie Couch and they were married October 18, 1958 at the Mount Vernon United Methodist Church. 

In May of 1964 the young couple moved to Beaver County, Oklahoma with 2 young children and one on the way.  Herb worked at various jobs including farming, ranching, Leo Miller Construction, Beaver Lumber, and finally Beaver County precinct 2.   He operated heavy equipment and proudly maintained county roads for many years, retiring in 1995.  

Herb was a member of the Beaver United Methodist Church. He served on the Garrett Elementary school board and several years as president of the Beaver County Fair Board.   He enjoyed organizing the horseshoe pitching contest at the annual Cowchip Celebration.   He was vice commander of the local American Legion post. 

Herb departed life on this earth on April 29, 2024 at the age of 94 years.

He was preceded in death by:  son, Stanley Sprague; his parents, Nelson (A.N) and Vena Sprague; sister, Beulah; and his wife of 61 years, Lura.

Herb is survived by his son J.R. Sprague and wife Debbie, daughter Connie Vaughan and husband Steven.    Grandchildren: Raegan Vaughan and wife Sara, Haley Martin and husband Tyler, Malorie Pease and husband Colton, Andrew Sprague and wife Whitley.   Seven great-grandchildren: Emory, Claire, Rhett, Hattie, Trace, Calvin, and Georgia.  Also surviving are sister Lavona Bell and brother John Sprague and wife Mary, in addition to many relatives and friends.  

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that memorial contributions be made to the Beaver United Methodist Church, Box 309, Beaver, OK or to the Mountain View Cemetery Association, 1499 EW 22 Rd, Beaver, OK.

Family Visitation is Friday Night, May 3, 2024 from 6 til 7 P.M. at Alan Clark Funeral Services. The public is invited.

Interment will be in the Mountain View Cemetery, Logan, Oklahoma.
